The House of the Dragon season 2 is now here, and as expected, things are getting fiery with the Dance of the Dragons being in full motion. It seems that we will be able to witness quite a lot of fire breathing fight scenes at the end of the second piece, as Greens and the Blacks are getting ready for battle with their scaly sidekicks.
Here, we review any and all dragons in House of the Dragon season 1 and whether or not they made an appearance in season 2. We also have the run-down of the dragons introduced in S2, the dragons that have only been mentioned but have not been featured in the show, and some dragon eggs.
Well, look no further because this comprehensive list of dragons in the series is here but please be aware that there are spoilers to House of the Dragon season 1 and 2 below.
How many dragons are there in House of the Dragon?
As of House of the Dragon season 2, there are 17 dragons in House of the Dragon: Syrax, Caraxes, Vhagar, Meleys, Seasmoke, Vermax, Arrax, Sunfyre, and Vermithor. Tyraxes, Moondancer, Dreamfyre, Silverwing, and three wild dragons have also been mentioned. Plus, there are now four dragon eggs in the mix – but more on those later. You can find out more about each dragon, including who their rider is, below.
Every dragon in House of the Dragon, listed
Syrax
Syrax is Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragon. She is last seen riding Syrax to Dragonstone to confront Daemon in the first season episode two; however, we can expect Daenerys and Syrax to lead the charge during the actual Dance of Dragons. The latest appearance of Syrax was in the last episode of the first season where he was hiding behind Otto and the green soldiers.
We most recently witnessed Syrax carrying pregnant Rhaenyra to Lucerys’s body in season 2’s opening episode.
Caraxes
Caraxes is one of the dragons of Daemon Targaryen. He flies with her to attack the Triarchy in S1E03, and he flies alongside his ex-wife Laena, and her dragon Vhagar in S1E06. Caraxes is also present in season 1, episode 10 to threaten some of the Kingsguard.
Vhagar
Vhagar is the oldest – and biggest – living dragon in Westeros. Originally owned by the now-deceased Laena Velaryon, it is currently ridden by Aemond Targaryen. In the episodes that follow the funeral of Laena in the fifth season, Aemond takes the dragon Vhagar to himself. He quarrels with Laena’s daughters Baela and Rhaena who claim the dragon as their own and Aemond is knocked blind in one eye. Vhagar also murders Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys and his dragon Arrax over Storm’s End in the final episode of the first season.
In season 2 she is defending King’s Landing from the dragons of Team Black. She also kills Meleys and Rhaenys in the battle of Rook’s Rest, which can be observed in season two, episode four. One blast of her fire at Aemond’s command is also credited for killing Aegon and Sunfyre.
Meleys
Meleys is one of Rhaenys Targaryen’s dragons. She is called the Red Queen, which is also the name given to Rhaenys: the Queen Who Never Was. The two are troublesome during Aegon’s coronation in season 1, episode 9 when they crash the dragon pit to make sure Alicent gets the message Ryenys is on Rhaenys side. As a result, at the end of the finale and in season 2, Rhaenys Targaryen and Meleys are flying around the Stepstones. We first encounter Meleys in the season 2 premiere where we see Rhaenys return from one such patrol.
Dreamfyre
Dreamfyre is the dragon from which Daemon stole an egg in S01E02 and this one that comes close to burning Aemond in the dragon pit in S01E06 after being bullied by his brothers and cousins.Helaena
Seasmoke
Seasmoke is a dragon belonging to Laenor Velaryon, and we notice him ride into battle against the Triarchy in the Stepstones in the first episode of the series. At this point in the show, Seasmoke is rider-less due to Laenor’s death that was staged in season one, episode seven.
However, in season 2 episode 6, a season after the previous event, after another dragonseed attempts to kill Seasmoke but is unsuccessful, it goes to The Stepstones, where Lord Corlys’ dragonseed Addam of Hull is defeated by the dragon. However, it seems like Seasmoke might get a new rider in the next episode as in the promo for episode 7 of Season 2, we can see the dragon looming behind Addam as he greets Rhaenyra and Syrax on the shore.
Vermax
Dragon of Jacaerys Velaryon; Vhylme; Vermax He has been with Jace from childhood since he was born, and hatched out of an egg that was planted in a crib where Jace slept. It has been evident that training the dragon is seen when Jace is being trained in season 1 episode 6. Their last appearance together was in season 1, when Vermax tried to bring Jacaerys to the Wall to meet Cregan Stark, but he is not shown on screen until the beginning of the second season, in episode 5. Riding with Jace, he goes to the Twins in the Riverlands to enlist House Frey for his mother’s campaign and we meet Vermax quietly waiting for his rider.
Arrax
Arrax is a dragon owned by Lucerys Velaryon, Rhaenyra Targaryen’s son and Jacaerys Velaryon’s younger brother. Arrax and Luke are both killed by Vhagar and Aemond over Storm’s End in the season 1 final episode.
Tyraxes
Tyraxes is ridden by Joffrey, the young son of Rhaenyra. The dragon of Daemon is not shown in the series up to now, but he mentions it in season 1, episode 10.
Moondancer
The first information about this dragon is that it is ridden by Baela Targaryen, the girl who was first mentioned in season 1, episode 10. She emerges in season 2, episode 3, and when Baela is wandering around, she comes across Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower.
Sunfyre
The first reference to Aegon Targaryen’s dragon is made in the sixth episode of the first season. He provokes his younger brother Aemond for not finding a dragon and gets the chance to take Vhagar in the process.
Riding on dragon backs, Aegon and Sunfyre take to the skies in the second season’s fourth episode at Rook’s Rest. Neither do Aemond and Vhagar deliver them on purpose, but still they are sent to the ground and are left severely wounded. Still being alive, barely, though, Aegon returns to King’s Landing together with his dragon, which would be Sunfyre, yet she is not with him and so it may well seem that he shall not be alive either.
Vermithor
Vermithor is sometimes called the Bronze Fury; once, the dragon belonged to Jaehaerys I, the great-grandfather of Rhaenyra and the predecessor of Viserys. We see Daemon trying to take him in the first series, the fifth episode – or at least, attempt to; he is the unsullied of Jaehaerys, but has had no rider save for his majesty since him and has stayed in his lair since.
Sheepstealer
Among the dragons which have not been claimed as of yet, one is Sheepstealer and this particular dragon might be seen in the season 2 because he was mentioned in the episode 6. When Rhaena Targaryen is riding through the Vale of Arryn, one day, she sees a very big area of burned heathland covered in sheep skeletons. Given what we know about Sheepstealer from the books, we can be more certain that this is the dragon that has been operating in the Vale all this time. Moreover, Rhaena is still unmarried and has not taken a dragon yet and she is full blooded therefore it will not come as a surprise if she was the one to master the wild creature.
Stormcloud
This is quite clear with the appearance of baby Aegon’s little dragon, in the sixth episode of the second season. Aegon Targaryen III is a protagonist character and he is the son of Daemon Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen, he received the dragon egg at the time of his birth for the small and cute orange dragon who now resides with Aegon at the safety of Vale. Despite the fact it is still difficult to name the dragon shown in the series as such, more to say, in the books we know that little Aegon has his dragon named as Stormcloud.
Unclaimed dragons
In the last episode of season 1, Daemon tells Rhaenyra that there are three dragons that are called ‘unridden’ or ‘feral’ and that they live in Dragonstone. However, we are grateful for Fire & Blood to know the names of these animals are the Cannibal, Grey Ghost, and Sheepstealer. It is essential to note that there is one more unclaimed dragon named Silverwing as well.
Dragon eggs
In the second season – the fourth episode, it is Rhaenys and Corlys’ granddaughter Rhaea Targaryen who is assigned with the task to take four dragon eggs screw with Viserys and Aegon, their infant sons and in order to ensure the continuation of the Targaryen bloodline. The coloured eggs, red, cream, and green have been identified to be the same eggs that yield Daenerys’ dragons called Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion in the Games of Thrones series, but the blue coloured egg’s origin has not been determined clearly.
